I saw a child some four years oldA
Along a meadow strayB
Alone she went unchecked untoldA
Her home not far awayB
-
She gazed around on earth and skyC
Now paused and now proceededD
Hill valley wood she passed them byC
Unmarked perchance unheededE
-
And now gay groups of roses brightF
In circling thickets bound herG
Yet on she went with footsteps lightF
Still gazing all around herG
-
And now she paused and now she stoopedH
And plucked a little flowerG
A simple daisy 'twas that droopedH
Within a rosy bowerG
-
The child did kiss the little gemI
And to her bosom pressed itJ
And there she placed the fragile stemI
And with soft words caressed itJ
-
I love to read a lesson trueK
From nature's open bookL
And oft I learn a lesson newK
From childhood's careless lookL
-
Children are simple loving trueK
'Tis Heaven that made them soM
And would you teach them be so tooK
And stoop to what they knowM
-
Begin with simple lessons thingsN
On which they love to lookL
Flowers pebbles insects birds on wingsN
These are God's spelling bookL
-
And children know His A B CO
As bees where flowers are setP
Would'st thou a skilful teacher beO
Learn then this alphabetP
-
From leaf to leaf from page to pageQ
Guide thou thy pupil's lookL
And when he says with aspect sageQ
Who made this wondrous bookL
-
Point thou with reverent gaze to heavenR
And kneel in earnest prayerS
That lessons thou hast humbly givenR
May lead thy pupil thereS
