Two bubbles on a mountain streamA
Began their race one shining mornB
And lighted by the ruddy beamA
Went dancing down 'mid shrub and thornB
-
The stream was narrow wild and loneC
But gayly dashed o'er mound and rockD
And brighter still the bubbles shoneC
As if they loved the whirling shockD
-
Each leaf and flower and sunny rayE
Was pictured on them as they flewF
And o'er their bosoms seemed to playE
In lovelier forms and colors newF
-
Thus on they went and side by sideG
They kept in sad and sunny weatherH
And rough or smooth the flowing tideG
They brightest shone when close togetherH
-
Nor did they deem that they could severH
That clouds could rise or morning waneI
They loved and thought that love for everH
Would bind them in its gentle chainI
-
But soon the mountain slope was o'erH
And 'mid new scenes the waters flowedJ
And the two bubbles now no moreK
With their first morning beauty glowedJ
-
They parted and the sunny rayE
That from each other's love they borrowedJ
That made their dancing bosoms gayE
While other bubbles round them sorrowedJ
-
That ray was dimmed and on the windJ
A shadow came as if from HeavenL
Yet on they flew and sought to findJ
From strife the bliss that love had givenL
-
They parted yet in sight they keptJ
And rivals now the friends becameM
And if perchance the eddies sweptJ
Them close they flashed with flameM
-
And fiercer forward seemed to boundJ
With the swift ripples toward the mainI
And all the lesser bubbles roundJ
Each sought to gather in its trainI
-
They strove and in that eager strifeN
Their morning friendship was forgotJ
And all the joys that sweeten lifeN
The rival bubbles knew them notJ
-
The leaves the flowers the grassy shoreK
Were all neglected in the chaseO
And on their bosoms now no moreK
These forms of beauty found a placeO
-
But all was dim and drear withinP
And envy dwelt where love was knownC
And images of fear and sinP
Were traced where truth and pleasure shoneC
-
The clouds grew dark the tide swelled highQ
And gloom was o'er the waters flungR
But riding on the billows nighQ
Each other now the bubbles swungR
-
Closer and closer still they rushedJ
In anger o'er the rolling riverH
They met and 'mid the waters crushedJ
The rival bubbles burst for everH
