The Mountain Stream Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABABBACAA DEDEEDEDD FGFGGFGFF HHHHHHHHH IJIJJIJII KHKHHKHKKOne summer morn while yet the thrilling lay | A |
Of the dew loving lark was full and strong | B |
Trampling the wild flowers in my careless way | A |
Up the steep mountain side I strode along | B |
My only guide a brook whose joyous song | B |
Seemed like a boy's light hearted roundelay | A |
As down it rushed the leafy bowers among | C |
Scattering o'er bud and bloom its pearly spray | A |
A beauteous semblance of life's opening day | A |
- | |
And looking back to that all gladdening morn | D |
When I was free and sportive as the stream | E |
When roses blushed with no suspected thorn | D |
And fancy's sunlight gilded every dream | E |
While hope yet shed its sweet delusive beam | E |
And disappointment still delayed to warn | D |
With fond regret I still pursued the theme | E |
With clambering step still up the steep was borne | D |
Too sad to smile too pleased perchance to mourn | D |
- | |
And now I stood beside that rivulet's spring | F |
That came unbidden with a bubbling bound | G |
And stealing forth a gentle trembling thing | F |
It seemed an infant fearing all around | G |
Yet clinging to its mother's breast the ground | G |
But soon it bolder grew and with a wing | F |
It went its carol was a joyous sound | G |
Making the silent woods responsive ring | F |
And the far forest echoes sighing sing | F |
- | |
And now I stood upon the mountain's height | H |
Like a wide map the landscape lay unrolled | H |
There could I trace that rivulet's path of light | H |
From the steep mountain to the sea of gold | H |
Now leaping o'er the rocks like chamois bold | H |
Now like a crouching hare concealed from sight | H |
Now hid beneath the willow's bowering fold | H |
As if they sought to stay its arrowy flight | H |
Then give it forth again more swift and bright | H |
- | |
'Twas changeful beautiful now dark now fair | I |
A tale of life from childhood to the tomb | J |
Its birth place near the skies in mountain air | I |
Where wild flowers throw around their sweet perfume | J |
Like the blest thoughts that often brightly bloom | J |
At home beneath a mother's culturing care | I |
Its form now hid in shadows such as gloom | J |
Our downward way its grave in ocean where | I |
It mingles with the wave a dweller there | I |
- | |
And though that stream be hidden from the view | K |
'Tis yet preserved 'neath ocean's briny crest | H |
That wide eternity of waves is true | K |
And as the planets anchored in their rest | H |
The sparkling streamlet lives and while unblest | H |
The land wave stagnant lingers there the blue | K |
Tide holds the river stainless in its breast | H |
An image still of life that sparkles through | K |
The starry deep of heaven for ever new | K |
