The Leaf Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEE FFGGHHIIJJKK AAFFLLMMNOPPQQRRSSTT UUIt came with spring's soft sun and showers | A |
Mid bursting buds and blushing flowers | A |
It flourished on the same light stem | B |
It drank the same clear dews with them | B |
The crimson tints of summer morn | C |
That gilded one did each adorn | C |
The breeze that whispered light and brief | D |
To bud or blossom kissed the leaf | D |
When o'er the leaf the tempest flew | E |
The bud and blossom trembled too | E |
- | |
But its companions passed away | F |
And left the leaf to lone decay | F |
The gentle gales of spring went by | G |
The fruits and flowers of summer die | G |
The autumn winds swept o'er the hill | H |
And winter's breath came cold and chill | H |
The leaf now yielded to the blast | I |
And on the rushing stream was cast | I |
Far far it glided to the sea | J |
And whirled and eddied wearily | J |
Till suddenly it sank to rest | K |
And slumbered in the ocean's breast | K |
- | |
Thus life begins its morning hours | A |
Bright as the birthday of the flowers | A |
Thus passes like the leaves away | F |
As withered and as lost as they | F |
Beneath the parent roof we meet | L |
In joyous groups and gayly greet | L |
The golden beams of love and light | M |
That dawn upon the youthful sight | M |
But soon we part and one by one | N |
Like leaves and flowers the group is gone | O |
One gentle spirit seeks the tomb | P |
His brow yet fresh with childhood's bloom | P |
Another treads the paths of fame | Q |
And barters peace to win a name | Q |
Another still tempts fortune's wave | R |
And seeking wealth secures a grave | R |
The last grasps yet the brittle thread | S |
Though friends are gone and joy is dead | S |
Still dares the dark and fretful tide | T |
And clutches at its power and pride | T |
Till suddenly the waters sever | U |
And like the leaf he sinks for ever | U |
