Safe in the magic of my woodsA
I lay and watched the dying lightB
Faint in the pale high solitudesA
And washed with rain and veiled by nightB
-
Silver and blue and green were showingC
And the dark woods grew darker stillD
And birds were hushed and peace was growingC
And quietness crept up the hillD
-
And no wind was blowingC
-
And I knewE
That this was the hour of knowingC
And the night and the woods and youE
Were one together and I should findF
Soon in the silence the hidden keyG
Of all that had hurt and puzzled meG
Why you were you and the night was kindF
And the woods were part of the heart of meG
-
And there I waited breathlesslyG
Alone and slowly the holy threeG
The three that I loved together grewE
One in the hour of knowingC
Night and the woods and youE
-
And suddenlyG
There was an uproar in my woodsA
-
The noise of a fool in mock distressA
Crashing and laughing and blindly goingC
Of ignorant feet and a swishing dressA
And a Voice profaning the solitudesA
-
The spell was broken the key denied meG
And at length your flat clear voice beside meG
Mouthed cheerful clear flat platitudesA
-
You came and quacked beside me in the woodH
You said quot The view from here is very good quotH
You said quot It's nice to be alone a bit quotH
And quot How the days are drawing out quot you saidH
You said quot The sunset's pretty isn't it quotH
-
-
-
By God I wish I wish that you were deadH
