The day that youth had diedA
There came to his grave sideA
In decent mourning from the country's endsB
Those scatter'd friendsB
Who had lived the boon companions of his primeC
And laughed with him and sung with him and wastedD
In feast and wine and many crown'd carouseE
The days and nights and dawnings of the timeC
When youth kept open houseF
Nor left untastedD
Aught of his high emprise and ventures dearG
No quest of his unshar'dD
All these with loitering feet and sad head bar'dD
Followed their old friend's bierH
Folly went firstD
With muffled bells and coxcomb still revers'dD
And after trod the bearers hat in handD
Laughter most hoarse and Captain pride with tannedD
And martial face all grim and fussy joyI
Who had to catch a train and lust poor snivelling boyI
These bore the dear departedD
Behind them broken heartedD
Came grief so noisy a widow that all saidD
Had he but wedD
Her elder sister sorrow in her steadD
And by her trying to soothe her all the timeC
The fatherless children colour tune and rhymeC
The sweet lad rhyme ran all uncomprehendingJ
Then at the way's sad endingJ
Round the raw grave they stay'd Old wisdom readD
In mumbling tone the Service for the DeadD
There stood romanceK
The furrowing tears had mark'd her rouged cheekJ
Poor old conceit his wonder unassuagedD
Dead innocency's daughter ignoranceL
And shabby ill dress'd generosityD
And argument too full of woe to speakJ
Passion grown portly something middle agedD
And friendship not a minute older sheD
Impatience ever taking out his watchM
Faith who was deaf and had to lean to catchN
Old wisdom's endless droneO
Beauty was thereP
Pale in her black dry eyed she stood aloneO
Poor maz'd imagination fancy wildD
Ardour the sunlight on his greying hairP
Contentment who had known youth as a childD
And never seen him since And spring came tooD
Dancing over the tombs and brought him flowersQ
She did not stay for longJ
And truth and grace and all the merry crewD
The laughing winds and rivers and lithe hoursQ
And hope the dewy eyed and sorrowing songJ
Yes with much woe and mourning generalR
At dead youth's funeralR
Even these were met once more together allS
Who erst the fair and living youth did knowT
All except only love Love had died long agoT
