-
-
Time and Space decreed his lotB
But little Man was quick to noteC
When Time and Space said Man might notB
Bravely he answered quot Nay I mote quotB
-
I looked on old New EnglandB
Time and Space stood fastB
Men built altars to DistanceD
At every mile they passedB
-
Yet sleek with oil a Force was hidB
Making mock of all they didB
Ready at the appointed hourE
To yield up to PrometheusD
The secular and well drilled PowerE
The Gods secreted thusD
-
And over high WantastiquerE
Emulous my lightnings ranF
Unregarded but afterE
To fall in with my planF
-
I beheld two ministriesD
One of air and one of earthG
At a thought I married theseD
And my New Age came to birthG
-
For rarely my purpose errsD
Though oft it seems to pauseD
And rods and cylindersD
Obey my planets' lawsD
-
Oil I drew from the wellH
And Franklin's spark from its blueI
Time and Distance fellH
And Man went forth anewI
-
On the prairie and in the streetB
So long as my chariots rollJ
I bind wings to Adam's feetB
And presently to his soulJ
