Breton Wife Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABAB ACACAC DEDEDE EFEFEF GHIHIH BJBJBJ

A Wintertide we had been wedA
When Jan went off to seaB
And now the laurel rose is redA
And I wait on the quayB
His berthing boat I watch with dreadA
For where oh where is heB
-
Weep not brave lass the Skipper saidA
Return to you he willC
In hospital he lies abedA
In Rio in BrazilC
But though I know he is not deadA
I do not know his illC
-
The Seaman's Hospital I wroteD
And soon there came replyE
The nurse's very words I quoteD
Your husband will not dieE
But you must wait a weary boatD
I cannot tell you whyE
-
The months of sun went snailing byE
I wrote by every mailF
Yet ever came the same replyE
Your patience must not failF
But though your good lad will not dieE
We cannot tell his ailF
-
-
-
Ten months have gone he's back againG
But aged by years a scoreH
And tells me with a look of painI
He'll never voyage moreH
And at the tide with longing vainI
He stares from out the doorH
-
And in his sleep he turns from meB
And moans with bitter blameJ
Of Spanish jades beyond the seaB
Who wrought him evil shameJ
So ever in him bleak will beB
The Ill That Has No NameJ
