Before before he was awareA
The 'Verey' light had risen on the airA
in hung glisteringB
And he could not stay his handC
From moving to the barbed wire's broken strandC
A rifle crackedD
He fellE
Night waned He was alone A heavy shellE
Whispered itself passing high high overheadF
His wound was wet to his hand for still it bledF
On the glimmering groundG
Then with a slow vain smile his wound be boundG
Knowing of course he'd not see home againH
Home whose thought he put awayI
His menH
Whispered 'Where's Mister Gates ' 'Out on the wire 'J
'I'll get him ' said oneK
Dawn blinked and the fireL
Of the Germans heaved up and down the lineM
'Stand to 'J
Too late 'I'll get him ' 'Oh the swineM
When we might get him in yet safe and whole 'J
'Corp'ral didn't see um fall out on patrolN
Or he'd a got um ' 'Ssssh'O
'No talking there 'J
A whisper ''A went down at the last flare 'J
Meanwhile the Maxims toc toc tocked their swishP
Of bullets told death lurked against the wishP
No hope for himQ
His corporal as one shamedR
Vainly and helplessly his ill luck blamedR
-
Then Gates slowly saw the mornS
Break in a rose peace through the lone thornS
By which he lay and felt the dawn wind passO
Whispering through the pallid stalky grassO
Of No Man's LandC
And the tears cameT
Scaldingly sweet more lovely than a flameT
He closed his eyes he thought of homeU
And grit his teeth He knew no help could comeV
-
The silent sun over the earth held swayI
Occasional rifles cracked and far awayI
A heedless speck a 'plane slid on aloneW
Like a fly traversing a cliff of stoneW
-
'I must get back ' said Gates aloud and heavedX
At his body But it lay bereavedX
Of any power He could not wait till nightY
And he lay still Blood swam across his sightY
Then with a groanW
'No luck ever Well I must die alone '-
-
Occasional rifles cracked A cloud that shoneW
Gold rimmed blackened the sun and then was goneZ
The sun still smiled The grass sang in its playI
Some one whistled 'Over the hills and far away '-
Gates watched silently the swift swift sunK
Burning his life before it was begunK
-
Suddenly he heard Corporal Timmins' voice 'Now thenH
'Urry up with that tea '-
'Hin Ginger ' 'Bill ' His menH
Timmins and Jones and Wilkinson 'the bard'Y
And Hughes and Simpson It was hardY
Not to see them Wilkinson stubby grimQ
With his 'No sir ' 'Yes sir ' and the slimQ
Simpson 'Indeed sir ' while it seemed he winkedY
Because his smiling left eye always blinkedY
And Corporal Timmins straight and blonde and wiseO
With his quiet scanning level hazel eyesO
And all the others tunics that didn't fitY
A dozen different sorts of eyes Oh itY
Was hard to lie there Yet he must But noA2
'I've got to die I'll get to them I'll go '-
-
Inch by inch he fought breathless and muteY
Dragging his carcase like a famished bruteY
His head was hammering and his eyes were dimQ
A bloody sweat seemed to ooze out of himQ
And freeze along his spine then he'd lie stillB2
Before another effort of his willB2
Took him one nearer yardY
-
The parapet was reachedY
He could not rise to it A look out screechedY
'Mr Gates '-
Three figures in one breathC2
Leaped up Two figures fell in toppling deathC2
And Gates was lifted in 'Who's hit ' said heD2
'Timmins and Jones ' 'Why did they that for meD2
I'm gone already ' Gently they laid him proneW
And silently watchedY
He twitched They heard him moanW
'Why for me ' His eyes roamed round and none repliedY
'I see it was alone I should have died '-
They shook their heads Then 'Is the doctor here '-
'He's comin' sir he's hurryin' no fear '-
'No goodY
'Lift me ' They lifted himQ
He smiled and held his arms out to the dimQ
And in a moment passed beyond their kenH
Hearing him whisper 'O my men my men '-
