To Mrs. Macmarland Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABACDCDC EFEFGFGF HIHIJIJI KLKMNLNL

IN Schnee der Alpen so it runsA
To those divine accords and hereB
We dwell in Alpine snows and sunsA
A motley crew for half the yearC
A motley crew we dwell to tasteD
A shivering band in hope and fearC
That sun upon the snowy wasteD
That Alpine ether cold and clearC
-
Up from the laboured plains and upE
From low sea levels we ariseF
To drink of that diviner cupE
The rarer air the clearer skiesF
For as the great old godly KingG
From mankind's turbid valley criesF
So all we mountain lovers singG
I to the hills will lift mine eyesF
-
The bells that ring the peaks that climbH
The frozen snow's unbroken curdI
Might yet revindicate in rhymeH
The pauseless stream the absent birdI
In vain for to the deeps of lifeJ
You lady you my heart have stirredI
And since you say you love my lifeJ
Be sure I love you for the wordI
-
Of kindness here I nothing sayK
Such loveless kindnesses there areL
In that grimacing common wayK
That old unhonoured social warM
Love but my dog and love my loveN
Adore with me a common starL
I value not the rest aboveN
The ashes of a bad cigarL
