The Shivering Beggar Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABB CCDD EEFF GGHH IIJJ KKLL HHEE MMNN OOEE

Near Clapham village where fields beganA
Saint Edward met a beggar manA
It was Christmas morning the church bells tolledB
The old man trembled for the fierce coldB
-
Saint Edward cried It is monstrous sinC
A beggar to lie in rags so thinC
An old grey beard and the frost so keenD
I shall give him my fur lined gaberdineD
-
He stripped off his gaberdine of scarletE
And wrapped it round the aged varletE
Who clutched at the folds with a muttered curseF
Quaking and chattering seven times worseF
-
Said Edward Sir it would seem you freezeG
Most bitter at your extremitiesG
Here are gloves and shoes and stockings alsoH
That warm upon your way you may goH
-
The man took stocking and shoe and gloveI
Blaspheming Christ our Saviour's loveI
Yet seemed to find but little reliefJ
Shaking and shivering like a leafJ
-
Said the saint again I have no great richesK
Yet take this tunic take these breechesK
My shirt and my vest take everythingL
And give due thanks to Jesus the KingL
-
The saint stood naked upon the snowH
Long miles from where he was lodged at BoweH
Praying O God my faith it grows faintE
This would try the temper of any saintE
-
Make clean my heart Almighty I prayM
And drive these sinful thoughts awayM
Make clean my heart if it be Thy willN
This damned old rascal's shivering stillN
-
He stooped he touched the beggar man's shoulderO
He asked him did the frost nip colderO
Frost said the beggar no stupid ladE
'Tis the palsy makes me shiver so badE
