The Dead Fox Hunter Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC DEDEFG HIHIJJ KLKLMM

We found the little captain at the headA
His men lay well alignedB
We touched his hand mdash stone cold mdash and he was deadA
And they all dead behindB
Had never reached their goal but they died wellC
They charged in line and in the same line fellC
-
They well known rosy colours of his faceD
Were almost lost in greyE
We saw that dying and in hopeless caseD
For others' sake that dayE
He'd smothered all rebellious groans in deathF
His fingers were tight clenched between his teethG
-
For those who live uprightly and die trueH
Heaven has no bars or locksI
And serves all taste or what's for him to doH
Up there but hunt the foxI
Angelic choirs No Justice must provideJ
For one who rose straight and in hunting diedJ
-
So if Heaven had no Hunt before hecameK
Why it must find one nowL
If any shirk and doubt they know the gameK
There's one to teach them howL
Andthe whole host of Seraphim completeM
Must jog in scarlet to his opening MeetM
