Rough hail they started 'Aberystwyth ' | - |

They changed through with even pitch | G |
Till at the end of their grand noise | H |
I called 'Give us the 'Sospan' boys ' | - |

Who knows a tune so soft so strong | I |
So pitiful as that 'Saucepan' song | I |
For exiled hope despaired desire | J |
Of lost souls for their cottage fire | J |

Then low at first with gathering sound | K |
Rose their four voices smooth and round | K |
Till back went Time once more I stood | L |
With Fusiliers in Mametz Wood | L |

Fierce burned the sun yet cheeks were pale | B |
For ice hail they had leaden hail | B |
In that fine forest green and big | M |
There stayed unbroken not one twig | M |

They sang they swore they plunged in haste | N |
Stumbling and shouting through the waste | N |
The little 'Saucepan' flamed on high | O |
Emblem of hope and ease gone by | O |

Rough pit boys from the coaly South | P |
They sang even in the cannon's mouth | P |
Like Sunday's chapel Monday's inn | Q |
The death trap sounded with their din | Q |
