Entrance and exit wounds are silvered cleanA
The track aches only when the rain remindsB
The one legged man forgets his leg of woodC
The one armed man his jointed wooden armD
The blinded man sees with his ears and handsE
As much or more than once with both his eyesF
Their war was fought these twenty years agoG
And now assumes the nature look of timeH
As when the morning traveller turn and viewsI
His wild night stumbling carved into a hillJ

What then was war No mere discord of flagsK
But an infectionof the common skyL
That sagged ominously upon the earthM
Even when the season was the airiest MayN
Down pressed the sky and we oppressed thrust outO
Boastful tongue clenched fist and valiant yardP
Natural infirmiries were out of modeQ
For Death was young again patron aloneR
Of healthy dying premature fate spasmS

Fear made fine bed fellows Sick with delightT
At life's discovered transitorinessK
Out youth became all flesh and waived the mindU
Never was such antiqueness of romanceK
Such tasty honey oozing from the heartV
And old importances came swimming back mdashW
Wine meat log fires a roof over the headX
A weapon at the thigh surgeons at callY
Even there was a use again for God mdashW
A word of rage in lack of meat wine fireZ
In ache of wounds beyond all surgeoningL

War was return of earth to ugly earthM
War was foundering of sublimitiesK
Extinction of each happy art and faithA2
By which the world had still kept head in airB2
Protesting logic or protesting loveC2
Until the unendurable moment struck mdashW
The inward scream the duty to run madD2

And we recall the merry ways of guns mdashW
Nibbling the walls of factory and churchW
Like a child piecrust felling groves of treesK
Like a child dandelions with a switchW
Machine guns rattle toy like from a hillJ
Down in a row the brave tin soldiers fallY
A sight to be recalled in elder daysK
When learnedly the future we devoteE2
To yet more boastful visions of despairB2
