Jonah Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABCCD EEEFFE GGHIIH EEJAAK EEEEEE LLAA

A purple whaleA
Proudly sweeps his tailA
Towards NinevehB
Glassy greenC
Surges betweenC
A mile of roaring seaD
-
O town of goldE
Of splendour multifoldE
Lucre and lustE
Leviathan's eyeF
Can surely spyF
Thy doom of death and dustE
-
On curving sandsG
Vengeful Jonah standsG
Yet forty daysH
Then down downI
Tumbles the townI
In flaming ruin ablazeH
-
With swift lamentE
Those Ninevites repentE
They cry in tearsJ
Our hearts failA
The whale the whaleA
Our sins prick us like spearsK
-
Jonah is vexedE
He cries What next what nextE
And shakes his fistE
Stupid cityE
The shame the pityE
The glorious crash I've missedE
-
Away goes Jonah grumblingL
Murmuring and mumblingL
Off ploughs the purple whaleA
With disappointed tailA
