It's A Queer Time Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AA BBCDDECE FGHHEIE JJDKKEDE LLHMMEHE

It's hard to know if you're alive or deadA
When steel and fire go roaring through your headA
-
One moment you'll be crouching at your gunB
Traversing mowing heaps down half in funB
The next you choke and clutch at your right breastC
No time to think leave all and off you goD
To Treasure Island where the Spice winds blowD
To lovely groves of mango quince and limeE
Breathe no good bye but ho for the Red WestC
It's a queer timeE
-
-
You're charging madly at them yelling 'Fag '-
When somehow something gives and your feet dragF
You fall and strike your head yet feel no painG
And find you're digging tunnels through the hayH
In the Big Barn 'cause it's a rainy dayH
Oh springy hay and lovely beams to climbE
You're back in the old sailor suit againI
It's a queer timeE
-
-
Or you'll be dozing safe in your dug outJ
A great roar the trench shakes and falls aboutJ
You're struggling gasping struggling then hulloD
Elsie comes tripping gaily down the trenchK
Hanky to nose that lyddite makes a stenchK
Getting her pinafore all over grimeE
Funny because she died ten years agoD
It's a queer timeE
-
-
The trouble is things happen much too quickL
Up jump the Boches rifles thump and clickL
You stagger and the whole scene fades awayH
Even good Christians don't like passing straightM
From Tipperary or their Hymn of HateM
To Alleluiah chanting and the chimeE
Of golden harps and I'm not well to dayH
It's a queer timeE
