FOR D C T KILLED AT FRICOURT MARCHA
-
-
Yet once an earlier David tookB
Smooth pebbles from the brookB
Out between the lines he wentC
To that one sided tournamentD
A shepherd boy who stood out fineE
And young to fight a PhilistineF
Clad all in brazen mail He swearsG
That he's killed lions he's killed bearsG
And those that scorn the God of ZionH
Shall perish so like bear or lionH
But the historian of that fightI
Had not the heart to tell it rightI
-
Striding within javelin rangeJ
Goliath marvels at this strangeJ
Goodly faced boy so proud of strengthK
David's clear eye measures the lengthK
With hand thrust back he cramps one kneeL
Poises a moment thoughtfullyL
And hurls with a long vengeful swingM
The pebble humming from the slingM
Like a wild bee flies a sure lineE
For the forehead of the PhilistineF
Then but there comes a brazen clinkN
And quicker than a man can thinkN
Goliath's shield parries each castO
Clang clang and clang was David's lastO
Scorn blazes in the Giant's eyeP
Towering unhurt six cubits highP
Says foolish David Damn your shieldQ
And damn my sling but I'll not yieldQ
He takes his staff of Mamre oakR
A knotted shepherd staff that's brokeR
The skull of many a wolf and foxS
Come filching lambs from Jesse's flocksS
Loud laughs Goliath and that laughT
Can scatter chariots like blown chaffT
To rout but David calm and braveU
Holds his ground for God will saveU
Steel crosses wood a flash and ohV
Shame for beauty's overthrowV
God's eyes are dim His ears are shutW
One cruel backhand sabre cutW
I'm hit I'm killed young David criesX
Throws blindly forward chokes and diesX
And look spike helmeted grey grimY
Goliath straddles over himY
