| Yet once an earlier David took | B |
| Smooth pebbles from the brook | B |
| Out between the lines he went | C |
| To that one sided tournament | D |
| A shepherd boy who stood out fine | E |
| And young to fight a Philistine | F |
| Clad all in brazen mail He swears | G |
| That he's killed lions he's killed bears | G |
| And those that scorn the God of Zion | H |
| Shall perish so like bear or lion | H |
| But the historian of that fight | I |
| Had not the heart to tell it right | I |
| - | |
| Striding within javelin range | J |
| Goliath marvels at this strange | J |
| Goodly faced boy so proud of strength | K |
| David's clear eye measures the length | K |
| With hand thrust back he cramps one knee | L |
| Poises a moment thoughtfully | L |
| And hurls with a long vengeful swing | M |
| The pebble humming from the sling | M |
| Like a wild bee flies a sure line | E |
| For the forehead of the Philistine | F |
| Then but there comes a brazen clink | N |
| And quicker than a man can think | N |
| Goliath's shield parries each cast | O |
| Clang clang and clang was David's last | O |
| Scorn blazes in the Giant's eye | P |
| Towering unhurt six cubits high | P |
| Says foolish David Damn your shield | Q |
| And damn my sling but I'll not yield | Q |
| He takes his staff of Mamre oak | R |
| A knotted shepherd staff that's broke | R |
| The skull of many a wolf and fox | S |
| Come filching lambs from Jesse's flocks | S |
| Loud laughs Goliath and that laugh | T |
| Can scatter chariots like blown chaff | T |
| To rout but David calm and brave | U |
| Holds his ground for God will save | U |
| Steel crosses wood a flash and oh | V |
| Shame for beauty's overthrow | V |
| God's eyes are dim His ears are shut | W |
| One cruel backhand sabre cut | W |
| I'm hit I'm killed young David cries | X |
| Throws blindly forward chokes and dies | X |
| And look spike helmeted grey grim | Y |
| Goliath straddles over him | Y |
