MotherA
-
Oh what a heavy sighB
Dicky are you ailingC
-
DickyD
-
Even by this fireside motherA
My heart is failingC
-
To night across the downE
Whistling and jollyD
I sauntered out from townE
With my stick of hollyD
-
Bounteous and cool from seaD
The wind was blowingC
Cloud shadows under the moonF
Coming and goingC
-
I sang old roaring songsG
Ran and leaped quickH
And turned home by St Swithin'sG
Twirling my stickH
-
And there as I was passingC
The churchyard gateI
An old man stopped me DickyD
You're walking lateI
-
I did not know the manJ
I grew afearedI
At his lean lolling jawK
His spreading beardI
-
His garments old and mustyI
Of antique cutI
His body very lean and bonyI
His eyes tight shutI
-
Oh even to tell it nowL
My courage ebbsG
His face was clay motherA
His beard cobwebsG
-
In that long horrid pauseG
Good night he saidI
Entered and clicked the gateI
Each to his bedI
-
MotherA
-
Do not sigh or fear DickyI
How is it rightI
To grudge the dead their ghostly darkM
And wan moonlightI
-
We have the glorious sunN
Lamp and firesideI
Grudge not the dead their moonshineO
When abroad they rideI
