A Child's Nightmare Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDBEFF GHIIHGFF JKLMGNFF OAPPEOFF GQRRQGFF

Through long nursery nights he stoodA
By my bed unwearyingB
Loomed gigantic formless queerC
Purring in my haunted earD
That same hideous nightmare thingB
Talking as he lapped my bloodE
In a voice cruel and flatF
Saying for ever Cat Cat CatF
-
That one word was all he saidG
That one word through all my sleepH
In monotonous mock despairI
Nonsense may be light as airI
But there's Nonsense that can keepH
Horror bristling round the headG
When a voice cruel and flatF
Says for ever Cat Cat CatF
-
He had faded he was goneJ
Years ago with Nursery LandK
When he leapt on me againL
From the clank of a night trainM
Overpowered me foot and headG
Lapped my blood while on and onN
The old voice cruel and flatF
Says for ever Cat Cat CatF
-
Morphia drowsed again I layO
In a crater by High WoodA
He was there with straddling legsP
Staring eyes as big as eggsP
Purring as he lapped my bloodE
His black bulk darkening the dayO
With a voice cruel and flatF
Cat Cat Cat Cat he said Cat CatF
-
When I'm shot through heart and headG
And there's no choice but to dieQ
The last word I'll hear no doubtR
Won't be Charge or Bomb them outR
Nor the stretcher bearer's cryQ
Let that body be he's deadG
But a voice cruel and flatF
Saying for ever Cat Cat CatF
