Rhyme Scheme: ABBAA CDDCC EFFEE GHHGG IJJIK LMMLL ENNEEThe fire burns bright | A |
And the hearth is clean swept | B |
As she likes it kept | B |
And the lamp is alight | A |
She is coming to night | A |
- | |
The wind's east of late | C |
When she comes she'll be cold | D |
So the big chair is rolled | D |
Close up to the grate | C |
And I listen and wait | C |
- | |
The shutters are fast | E |
And the red curtains hide | F |
Every hint of outside | F |
But hark how the blast | E |
Whistled then as it passed | E |
- | |
Or was it the train | G |
How long shall I stand | H |
With my watch in my hand | H |
And listen in vain | G |
For the wheels in the lane | G |
- | |
Hark A rumble I hear | I |
Will the wind not be still | J |
And it comes down the hill | J |
And it grows on the ear | I |
And now it is near | K |
- | |
Quick a fresh log to burn | L |
Run and open the door | M |
Hold a lamp out before | M |
To light up the turn | L |
And bring in the urn | L |
- | |
You are come then at last | E |
O my dear is it you | N |
I can scarce think it true | N |
I am holding you fast | E |
And sorrow is past | E |
