The English novel written between 1700 and 1740 remains a comparatively neglected area. In addition to Daniel Defoe, whose Robinson Crusoe and Moll Flanders are landmarks in the history of English fiction, many other authors were at work. This bibliography provides a listing of novels and critical materials pertinent to them. It additionally includes entries for bibliographies, anthologies, and studies that illuminate the cultural, political, and historical background of the period. Robert Fuller Murray Books, Robert Fuller Murray poetry book Enterprising Southerners Authors: Robert C. Kenzer, Professor Robert C Kenzer
Publisher: University of Virginia Press
Published Date: 1997
Categories: Social Science
Most historians agree that only a small share of southern blacks experienced economic gains in the fifty years following the Civil War. Little attention has been focused, however, on the minority who successfully acquired property and conducted business during this time. In Enterprising Southerners, Robert C. Kenzer examines the characteristics of North Carolina's African-American population in order to explain the social and political factors that shaped economic opportunity for this group from the Civil War until 1915. What is surprising, Kenzer asserts, is that his research does not support lingering theories that the "heritage of slavery" adversely affected blacks' performance in the market economy. Instead, he blames economic barriers to development, such as lack of capital and poorly developed markets. This study not only provides a valuable history of one state's black population, but also paves the way for similar scholarship in other southern states.

Publisher: University Press of Kentucky
Published Date: 2013-04-01
Categories: History
"When Floyd Collins became trapped in a cave in southern Kentucky in early 1925, the sensationalism and hysteria of the rescue attempt generated America's first true media spectacle, making Collins's story one of the seminal events of the century. The crowds that gathered outside Sand Cave turned the rescue site into a carnival. Collins's situation was front-page news throughout the country, hourly bulletins interrupted radio programs, and Congress recessed to hear the latest word. Trapped! is both a tense adventure and a brilliant historical recreation of the past. This new edition includes a new epilogue revealing information about the Floyed Collins story that has come to light since the book was first published.

Robert Fuller Murray Books, Robert Fuller Murray poetry book Bird Conservation Authors: David R. Williams, Robert G. Pople, David A. Showler, Lynn V. Dicks, Matthew F. Child
Publisher: Pelagic Publishing
Published Date: 2013-03-01

This book brings together scientific evidence and experience relevant to the practical conservation of wild birds. The authors worked with an international group of bird experts and conservationists to develop a global list of interventions that could benefit wild birds. For each intervention, the book summarises studies captured by the Conservation Evidence project, where that intervention has been tested and its effects on birds quantified. The result is a thorough guide to what is known, or not known, about the effectiveness of bird conservation actions throughout the world. The preparation of this synopsis was funded by the Natural Environment Research Council and Arcadia.

Stage director Robert Wilson has devoted himself to the integration of elements from a range of creative fields into the realm of theater. Light and movement have played an especially central role in his productions, not only as compositional elements but as symbolic features. In this publication, his wildly creative, discipline-crossing oeuvre is approached through a framework of five suggestive sections: "The Deaf Man's Gaze," "The Automaton's Freedom," "What Marlene Dietrich Knew," "The Prisms of Silence" and "The Theater in Infinite Space." 160 images

Poem of the day

Andrew Lang Poem
Ballade Of The Midnight Forest
 by Andrew Lang

Still sing the mocking fairies, as of old,
Beneath the shade of thorn and holly-tree;
The west wind breathes upon them, pure and cold,
And wolves still dread Diana roaming free
In secret woodland with her company.
'Tis thought the peasants' hovels know her rite
When now the wolds are bathed in silver light,
And first the moonrise breaks the dusky grey,
