Vanity Of Vanities Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABB CCDD EFGH IIJJ KLAA EEMN OOJ JJPP QRHH SSAA

Be ye happy if ye mayA
In the years that pass awayA
Ye shall pass and be forgotB
And your place shall know you notB
-
Other generations riseC
With the same hope in their eyesC
That in yours is kindled nowD
And the same light on their browD
-
They shall see the selfsame sunE
That your eyes now gaze uponF
They shall breathe the same sweet airG
And shall reck not who ye wereH
-
Yet they too shall fade at lastI
In the twilight of the pastI
They and you alike shall beJ
Lost from the world's memoryJ
-
Then while yet ye breathe and liveK
Drink the cup that life can giveL
Be ye happy if ye mayA
In the years that pass awayA
-
Ere the golden bowl be brokenE
Ere ye pass and leave no tokenE
Ere the silver cord be loosedM
Ere ye turn again to dustN
-
And shall this be all ' ye cryO
But to eat and drink and dieO
If no more than this there beJ
Vanity of vanity '-
-
Yea all things are vanityJ
And what else but vain are yeJ
Ye who boast yourselves the kingsP
Over all created thingsP
-
Kings whence came your right to reignQ
Ye shall be dethroned againR
Yet for this your one brief hourH
Wield your mockery of powerH
-
Dupes of Fate that treads you downS
Wear awhile your tinsel crownS
Be ye happy if ye mayA
In the years that pass awayA
