And subside feeling dreadfully weak | C |

Did you ever when going ahead | A |
In a fervid defence of the Stage | E |
Get checked in your noble rage | E |
By somehow losing your thread | A |

Did you ever rise to reply | F |
To a toast say 'The Volunteers' | D |
And evoke loud laughter and cheers | D |
When you didn't exactly know why | F |

Did you ever wax witty and when | G |
You had smashed an opponent quite small | H |
Did he seem not to mind it at all | H |
But get up and smash you again | G |

If any or all of these things | D |
Have happened to you as to me | I |
I think you'll be found to agree | I |
With yours truly when sadly he sings | D |
