Aien Aristeuein (motto Of St. Andrews University) Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBCDEDE FGGFHEHE IJJIGEGE

Ever to be the best To leadA
In whatsoever things are trueB
Not stand among the halting crewB
The faint of heart the feeble kneedC
Who tarry for a certain signD
To make them follow with the restE
Oh let not their reproach be thineD
But ever be the bestE
-
For want of this aspiring soulF
Great deeds on earth remain undoneG
But sharpened by the sight of oneG
Many shall press toward the goalF
Thou running foremost of the throngH
The fire of striving in thy breastE
Shalt win although the race be longH
And ever be the bestE
-
And wilt thou question of the prizeI
'Tis not of silver or of goldJ
Nor in applauses manifoldJ
But hidden in the heart it liesI
To know that but for thee not oneG
Had run the race or sought the questE
To know that thou hast ever doneG
And ever been the bestE
