It is the Police CommissionersA
All on a winter's dayB
And they to prove the town waterC
Have set themselves awayB
-
They went to the north they went to the southD
And into the west went theyB
Till they found a civil civil engineerE
And unto him did sayB
-
'Now tell to us thou civil engineerE
If this be fit to drink '-
And they showed him a cup of the town waterC
Which was as black as inkF
-
He took three sips of the town waterC
And black in the face was heG
And they turned them back and fled awayB
Amazed that this should beG
-
And he has written a broad letterC
And sealed it with a ringH
And the letter saith that the town waterC
Is not a goodly thingH
-
And they have met and the Bailies allI
And eke the CouncillorsB
And they have ta'en the broad letterC
And read it within the doorsB
-
And there has fallen a great quarrelJ
And a striving within the doorsB
And quarrelsome words have the Bailies saidK
And eke the CouncillorsB
-
And one saith 'We will have other water '-
And another saith 'But nay '-
And none may tell what the end shall beG
Alack and well a dayB
-
I love the inoffensive frogL
'A little child a limber elf '-
With health and spirits all agogL
He does the long jump in a bogL
Or teaches men to swim and diveM
If he should be cut up aliveM
Should I not be cut up myselfN
-
So I intend to be straightwayB
An Anti VivisectionistB
I'll read Miss Cobbe five hours a dayB
And watch the little frogs at playB
With no desire to see their heartsB
At work or other inward partsB
If other inward parts existB
