The moon is not as far as we are toldA
The universe is not so very oldA
The stars are not suns to earth shall they fallB
Those shining daily circling spheres are smallB
And children to the sun and moon The sunC
Which like them daily round the earth does runC
The moon a little slower round earth goesD
Every day and the very same size showsD
Herself to be with her husband the sunC
For he which tells us when the day is doneC
Is also smaller than earth and quite nearE
For it s dark when he hides behind earth s sphereE
And only then does the moon shine clear brightF
Proving thereby that it has its own lightF
One can see its light slowly revolvingG
One hundred and eighty degrees shiningG
Always and always it is going roundH
Like a clock ticking but without a soundH
The sun is higher than the moon and yetI
Is seen as the same size for they are setI
Together in the sky and they are farJ
But not as imagined And every starJ
Fixed above them is somewhat higher stillK
At the same height for together they fillK
Our vision above going round aboutL
The earth at the same time But further outL
No one can see since there is nothing thereM
No void of space no mysterious airM
No light no fire no gas nor solid thingG
Nothing at all for our imaginingG
And since these things be so which our eyes seeN
A display of lights which God did decreeN
In the heavens how then can the earth s skiesO
Be so much wider How so vast in sizeO
For the stars which were made to be seen countP
Numbering in thousands is their amountP
How can earth not to the heavens compareM
How can the heavens have much room to spareM
For the heavens only mean the earth s skyQ
And they re not heavens where the earth does lieQ
Else the heavens would then not be aboveR
For the stars rotate as if they all loveR
The earth for to it they are bound for itS
They are thus the skies have a ceiling litS
The stars are not far away but they re highQ
With sun and moon they make a deeper skyQ
Earth s second heaven where no atmosphereE
Exists and which ends where they do appearE
The fixed stars are the highest things that swimT
In the universe s outermost rimT
Waters above the heavens turning roundH
From east to west are furthest from the groundH
And swirling make the sun and moon s motionC
As if they were like ships on an oceanC
So moved they are by surrounding forcesU
And so they run daily on their coursesV
The stars themselves are in the waters flowW
And hence they twinkle with flickering glowW
But the wandering stars that are belowW
Are free to move whichever way they goW
Beneath these planets is the atmosphereE
Herein the clouds form where the LORD is nearE
The LORD who is God he rides upon cloudsX
And like a veil they his Spirit enshroudsX
This first heaven is for his chariotY
Through its thick dark mist he breaks the quietY
He walks on the wings of the wind he whirlsX
About the world beneath the sparkling pearlsX
The lightnings are the thunders of his voiceX
Which though they may hurt or kill I rejoiceX
The meek in heart God is yet a lionC
And he roars from the north pole from SionC
He sends forth his command from there aboveR
In the north celestial pole dwells sweet loveR
There is the hope of hearts JerusalemZ
Like a dream like an untouchable gemA2
Its immaterial matter is ablazeX
Gold palaces burn in endless amazeX
God does nothing except in his wisdomZ
In love in chastening for his kingdomZ
And he burns up the wicked with arrowsX
Flames from his mouth and bright light he bellowsX
For he is the mighty LORD of thunderB2
The true God with Jesus Son of wonderB2
He casts stones from heaven as he pleasesX
And with his hand a lightning sword seizesX
Angels chariots and horses of fireB2
He wields in his will to fulfill desireB2
Swifter than eagles swift as the whirlwindC2
Chariots and horses fly and exscindC2
The wicked He casts a glittering spearE
And ball lightning in mystery floats nearE
His anger and rebuke are flames of fireB2
Yet born of music softer than a lyreD2
His Spirit is love softer than the seaX
Yet from waves tempest tossed the wicked fleeX
Wrath is as the wind on a sea of calmE2
Love deadly but at heart a healing balmE2
In the first heaven of clouds God does roamF2
Yet the north celestial pole is his homeF2
To Jerusalem the pure in spiritC2
Go and there with the King of kings they sitC2
In his bosom dwelling and therein litC2
Shining like the sun and as golden writC2
In his shining eyes speak eternal loveR
Utter words in the sweetness of the DoveR
The LORD S children in their childlikeness gleamG2
As if they were his deep celestial dreamG2
But better than any phantom imageH2
They ever make the smiles of his visageH2
Their joy is not to be pleased but to pleaseX
Thus Lord Jesus died for them to appeaseX
The wrath of God which they did not deserveI2
For unknowingly they did Satan serveI2
For though their flesh sinned their spirit did notC2
Thus for God to distinguish the bad lotC2
From the good and not in rage against sinC
Commit injustice Jesus died and inC
Him we died as perfectly resistingG
Sin for his flesh was the representingG
Of us all as perfectly obedientC2
For that righteousness was our true intentC2
For Satan made our white appear as blackJ2
But Jesus took that sin and changed it backJ2
Bearing our sin meant interpreting itC2
As it really is as righteousness litC2
Up in God the bright Sun of righteousnessX
Showing us to God as pure in whitenessX
Through his own spotless grand obedient actC2
For his death showed our innocence as factC2
In the heart of God to his emotionC
To still him to calm the enraged oceanC
That God who is love a fiery SpiritC2
Would not unjustly send into the pitC2
His own children who were entangled inC
With their flesh the wicked doers own sinC
That there might be a true separationC
In the heart of God through the elationC
Of seeing in Jesus his own childrenC
As spotless as he and as distinct thenC
As he is from the wicked For JesusX
The offering for his children pleasesX
The heart of God in a perfect mannerB2
And thus Christ s cross is our only bannerB2
Behold the pain that made crimson sin whiteC2
That interpreted darkness as pure lightC2
Behold the pain the banner does declareM
And into this banner of Christ s cross stareM
Gaze till sin is stripped naked and made fairM
Till you see yourself as righteousness thereM
