A gentleman to give us somewhat newA
Hath brought up OXFORD with him to show youA
Pray be not frighted Tho the scaene and gown'sB
The Universities the wit's the town'sB
The lines each honest Englishman may speakeC
Yet not mistake his mother tongue for GreekeC
For stil 'twas part of his vow'd liturgieD
From learned comedies deliver meE
Wishing all those that lov'd 'em here asleepeF
Promising SCHOLARS but no SCHOLARSHIPF
-
You'd smile to see how he do's vex and shakeC
Speakes naught but if the PROLOGUE do's but takeC
Or the first act were past the pikes once thenG
Then hopes and joys then frowns and fears agenG
Then blushes like a virgin now to beE
Rob'd of his comicall virginityE
In presence of you all In short you'd sayB
More hopes of mirth are in his looks then playB
-
These feares are for the noble and the wiseB
But if 'mongst you there are such fowle dead eyesB
As can damne unaraign'd cal law their pow'rsB
Judging it sin enough that it is oursB
And with the house shift their decreed desiresB
FAIRE still to th' BLACKE BLACKE still to the WHITE FRYERSB
He do's protest he wil sit down and weepF
Castles and pyramidsB
No he wil onG
Proud to be rais'd by such destructionG
So far from quarr'lling with himselfe and witH
That he wil thank them for the benefitH
Since finding nothing worthy of their hateI
They reach him that themselves must envy atJ
