To The Memory Of The Brave Americans Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AB CBCD EFEG HIHI JFJK LMLM NOHO PQPQ RSRS

Under General Greene in South CarolinaA
who fell in the action of SeptemberB
-
-
At Eutaw Springs the valiant diedC
Their limbs with dust are covered o'erB
Weep on ye springs your tearful tideC
How many heroes are no moreD
-
If in this wreck or ruin theyE
Can yet be thought to claim a tearF
O smite your gentle breast and sayE
The friends of freedom slumber hereG
-
Thou who shalt trace this bloody plainH
If goodness rules thy generous breastI
Sigh for the wasted rural reignH
Sign for the shepherds sunk to restI
-
Stranger their humble graves adornJ
You too may fall and ask a tearF
'Tis not the beauty of the mornJ
That proves the evening shall be clearK
-
They saw their injured country's woeL
The flaming town the wasted fieldM
Then rushed to meet the insulting foeL
They took the spear but left the shieldM
-
Led by thy conquering genius GreeneN
The Britons they compelled to flyO
None distant viewed the fatal plainH
None grieved in such a cause to dieO
-
But like the Parthian famed of oldP
Who flying still their arrows threwQ
These routed Britons full as boldP
Retreated and retreating slewQ
-
Now rest in peace our patriot bandR
Though far from nature's limits thrownS
We trust they find a happier landR
A brighter sunshine of their ownS
