The shower is past and the skyA
O'erhead is both mild and sereneB
Save where a few drops from on highA
Like gems twinkle over the greenB
And glowing fair in the black northC
The rainbow o'erarches the cloudD
The sun in his glory comes forthC
And larks sweetly warble aloudD
-
That dismally grim northern skyA
Says God in His vengeance once frownedE
And opened His flood gates on highA
Till obstinate sinners were drownedE
The lively bright south and that bowF
Say all this dread vengeance is o'erG
These colours that smilingly glowH
Say we shall be deluged no moreI
-
Ever blessed be those innocent daysJ
Ever sweet their remembrance to meK
When often in silent amazeJ
Enraptured I'd gaze upon theeK
Whilst arching adown the black skyA
Thy colours glowed on the green hillL
To catch thee as lightning I'd flyA
But aye you eluded my skillL
-
From hill unto hill your gay sceneB
You shifted whilst crying aloudD
I ran till at length from the greenB
You shifted at once to the cloudD
So vain worldly phantoms betrayM
The youths who too eager pursueN
When ruined and far led astrayM
Th' illusion escapes from their viewN
-
Those peaceable days knew no careO
Except what arose from my playM
My favourite lambkin and hareO
And cabin I built o'er the wayM
No cares did I say Ah I'm wrongP
Even childhood from cares is not freeK
Far distant I see a grim throngP
Shake horrible lances at meK
-
One day I remember it stillL
For pranks I had played on the clownQ
Who lived on the neighbouring hillL
My cabin was trod to the groundE
Who ever felt grief such as IA
When crashed by this terrible blowH
Not Priam the monarch of TroyR
When all his proud towers lay lowH
-
And grief upon grief was my lotS
Soon after my lambkin was slainT
My hare having strayed from its cotS
Was chased by the hounds o'er the plainT
What countless calamities teemU
From memory's page on my viewN
How trifling soever you seemU
Yet once I have wept over youN
-
Then cease foolish heart to repineT
No stage is exempted from careO
If you would true happiness findV
Come follow and I'll show you whereO
But first let us take for our guideW
The Word which Jehovah has pennedX
By this the true path is descriedX
Which leads to a glorious endX
-
How narrow this path to our viewN
How steep an ascent lies beforeI
Whilst foolish fond heart laid for youN
Are dazzling temptations all o'erG
What bye ways with easy descentX
Invite us through pleasures to strayM
Whilst Satan with hellish intentX
Suggests that we ought to obeyM
-
But trust not the father of liesY
He tempts you with vanity's dreamU
His pleasure when touched quickly diesY
Like bubbles that dance on the streamU
Look not on the wine when it glowsZ
All ruddy in vessels of goldX
At last it will sting your reposeZ
And death at the bottom unfoldX
-
But lo an unnatural nightX
Pours suddenly down on the eyeA
The sun has withdrawn all his lightX
And rolls a black globe o'er the skyA
And hark what a cry rent the airO
Immortal the terrible soundX
The rocks split with honible tearO
And fearfully shakes all the groundX
-
The dead from their slumbers awakeA2
And leaving their mouldy domainT
Make poor guilty mortals to quakeA2
As pallid they glide o'er the plainT
Sure Nature's own God is oppressedX
And Nature in agony criesY
The sun in his mourning is dressedX
To tell the sad news through the skiesY
-
Yet surely some victory's gainedX
Important and novel and greatX
Since Death has his captives unchainedX
And widely thrown open his gateX
Yes victory great as a GodX
Could gain over hell death and sinT
This moment's achieved by the bloodX
Of Jesus our crucified KingB2
-
But all the dread conflict is o'erG
Lo cloud after cloud rolls awayM
And heaven serene as beforeI
Breaks forth in the splendour of dayM
And all the sweet landscape aroundX
Emerged from the ocean of nightX
With groves woods and villages crownedX
Astonish and fill with delightX
-
But see where that crowd melts awayM
Three crosses sad spectacles showH
Our Guide has not led us astrayM
Heart this is the secret you'd knowH
Two thieves and a crucified GodX
Hangs awfully mangled betweenT
Whilst fast from His veins spouting bloodX
Runs dyeing with purple the greenT
-
Behold the red flood rolls alongP
And forming a bason belowH
Is termed in Emanuel's songP
The fount for uncleanness and woeH
Immerged in that precious tideX
The soul quickly loses its stainsC2
Though deeper than crimson they're dyedX
And 'scapes from its sorrows and painsC2
-
This fountain is opened for youN
Go wash without money or priceD2
And instantly formed anewN
You'll lose all your woes in a triceD2
Then cease foolish heart to repineN
No stage is exempted from careO
If you would true happiness findX
'Tis on Calvary seek for it thereO
