One sunny morn of MayA
When dressed in flowery greenB
The dewy landscape charmedC
With Nature's fairest sceneB
In thoughtful moodD
I slowly strayedE
O'er hill and daleF
Through bush and gladeE
-
Throughout the cloudless skyG
Of light unsullied blueH
The larks their matins raisedI
Whilst on my dizzy viewH
Like dusky motesJ
They winged their wayA
Till vanished inK
The blaze of dayA
-
The linnets sweetly sangL
On every fragrant thornM
Whilst from the tangled woodN
The blackbirds hailed the mornM
And through the dewH
Ran here and thereO
But half afraidE
The startled hareO
-
The balmy breeze just kissedP
The countless dewy gemsQ
Which decked the yielding bladeE
Or gilt the sturdy stemsQ
And gently o'erR
The charmed sightS
A deluge shedT
Of trembling lightS
-
A sympathetic glowU
Ran through my melting soulV
And calm and sweet delightS
O'er all my senses stoleV
And through my heartW
A grateful floodX
Of joy rolled onY
To Nature's GodZ
-
Time flew unheeded byG
Till wearied and oppressedA2
Upon a flowery bankB2
I laid me down to restA2
Beneath my feetC2
A purling streamD2
Ran glittering inK
The noontide beamD2
-
I turned me round to viewH
The lovely rural sceneB
And just at hand I spiedE2
A cottage on the greenB
The street was cleanB
The walls were whiteS
The thatch was neatC2
The window brightS
-
Bold chanticleer arrayedE
In velvet plumage gayA
With many an amorous dameF2
Fierce strutted o'er the wayA
And motley ducksG2
Were waddling seenB
And drake with neckH2
Of glossy greenB
-
The latch I gently raisedI
And oped the humble doorI2
An oaken stool was placedJ2
On the neat sanded floorI2
An aged manK2
Said with a smileL2
You're welcome sirR
Come rest a whileL2
-
His coarse attire was cleanB
His manner rude yet kindM2
His air his words and looksN2
Showed a contented mindM2
Though mean and poorO2
Thrice happy heP2
As by our taleF
You soon shall seeP2
-
But don't expect to hearQ2
Of deeds of martial fameF2
Or that our peasant meanB
Was born of rank or nameF2
And soon will strutR2
As in romanceS2
A knight and allT2
In armour glanceS2
-
I sing of real lifeU2
All else is empty showU
To those who read a sourceV2
Of much unreal woeU
Pollution tooH
Through novel veinsW2
Oft fills the mindM2
With guilty stainsW2
-
Our peasant long was bredT
Affliction's meagre childX2
Yet gratefully resignedM2
Loud hymning praises smiledX2
And like a towerR
He stood unmovedY2
Supported byG
The God he lovedZ2
-
His loving wife long sinceA3
Was numbered with the deadT
His son a martial youthB3
Had for his country bledT
And now remainedC3
One daughter fairO
And only sheP2
To soothe his careO
-
The aged man with tearsD3
Spoke of the lovely maidE
How earnestly she stroveE3
To lend her father aidE
And as he ranK2
Her praises o'erR
She gently opedE
The cottage doorI2
-
With vegetable storeI2
The table soon she spreadE
And pressed me to partakeF3
Whilst blushes rosy redE
Suffused her faceG3
The old man smiledE
Well pleased to seeP2
His darling childE
-
With venerable airO
He then looked up to GodE
A blessing craved on allT2
And on our daily foodE
Then kindly beggedE
I would excuseH3
Their humble fairO
And not refuseI3
-
The tablecloth though coarseV2
Was of a snowy whiteE
The vessels spoons and knivesJ3
Were clean and dazzling brightE
So down we satE
Devoid of careO
Nor envied kingsK3
Their dainty fareO
-
When nature was refreshedE
And we familiar grownL3
The good old man exclaimedE
Around Jehovah's throneL3
Come let us allT2
Our voices raiseM3
And sing our greatE
Redeemer's praiseM3
-
Their artless notes were sweetE
Grace ran through every lineN3
Their breasts with rapture swelledE
Their looks were all divineN3
Delight o'er allT2
My senses stoleV
And heaven's pure joyO3
O'erwhelmed my soulV
-
When we had praised our GodE
And knelt around His throneL3
The aged man beganK2
In deep and zealous toneL3
With hands upraisedE
And heavenward eyeG
And prayed loudE
And ferventlyP2
-
He prayed that for His sakeF3
Whose guiltless blood was shedE
For guilty ruined manK2
We might that day be fedE
With that pure breadE
Which cheers the soulV
And living streamD2
Where pleasures rollV
-
He prayed long for allT2
And for his daughter dearP3
That she preserved from illQ3
Might lead for many a yearP3
A spotless lifeU2
When he's no moreI2
Then follow himR3
To Canaan's shoreI2
-
His faltering voice then fellS3
His tears were dropping fastE
And muttering praise to GodE
For all His mercies pastE
He closed his prayerO
Midst heavenly joysT3
And tasted blissU3
Which never cloysU3
-
In sweet discourse we spentE
The fast declining dayE
We spoke of Jesus' loveV3
And of that narrow wayE
Which leads through careO
And toil belowU
To streams where joysU3
Eternal flowU
-
The wondrous plan of GraceU3
Adoring we surveyedE
The birth of heavenly skillQ3
In Love Eternal laidE
Too deep for clearP3
Angelic kenW3
And far beyondE
Dim sighted menW3
-
To tell you all that passedE
Would far exceed my powerR
Suffice it then to sayE
Joy winged the passing hourR
Till ere we knewH
The setting dayE
Had clad the worldE
In silver greyE
-
I kindly took my leaveX3
And blessed the happy lotE
Of those I left behindE
Lodged in their humble cotE
And pitied someY3
In palace wallsU3
Where pride tormentsU3
And pleasure pallsU3
-
The silver moon now shedE
A flood of trembling lightE
On tower and tree and streamD2
The twinkling stars shone brightE
Nor misty stainZ3
Nor cloud was seenB
O'er all the deepA4
Celestial greenB
-
Mild was the lovely nightE
Nor stirred a whispering breezeU3
Smooth was the glassy lakeF3
And still the leafy treesU3
No sound in airO
Was heard afloatE
Save Philomel'sU3
Sweet warbling noteE
-
My thoughts were on the wingB4
And back my fancy fledE
To where contentment dweltE
In the neat humble shedE
To shining courtsU3
From thence it ranK2
Where restless prideE
Oppresses manK2
-
In fame some search for blissU3
Some seek content in gainZ3
In search of happinessU3
Some give the slackened reinZ3
To passions fierceU3
And down the streamD2
Through giddy lifeU2
Of pleasures dreamD2
-
These all mistake the wayE
As many more have doneC4
The narrow path of blissU3
Through God's Eternal SonC4
Directly tendsU3
And only heP2
Who treads this pathD4
Can happy beP2
-
Who anchors all aboveV3
Has still a happy lotE
Though doomed for life to dwellS3
E'en in a humble cotE
And when he laysU3
This covering downE4
He'll wear a brightE
Immortal crownE4
