Study to show thyself approved unto God a workman that needeth not to be ashamed rightly dividing the word of truth TIMOTHY iiA
-
My youthful brother oft I longB
To write to you in prose or songB
With no pretence to judgment strongB
But warm affectionC
May truest friendship rivet longB
Our close connectionC
-
With deference what I impartD
Receive with humble grateful heartD
Nor proudly from my counsel startD
I only lend itE
A friend ne'er aims a poisoned dartD
He wounds to mend itE
-
A graduate you've just been madeF
And lately passed the Mitred HeadG
I trust by the Blest Spirit ledG
And Shepherd's careH
And not a wolf in sheepskin cladI
As numbers areJ
-
The greatest office you sustainK
For love of souls and not of gainK
Through your neglect should one be slainK
The Scriptures sayL
Your careless hands his blood will stainK
On the Last DayL
-
But if pure truths like virgin snowsM
You loud proclaim to friends and foesM
Consoling these deterring thoseM
To heaven you'll flyN
Though stubborn sinners still opposeM
And graceless dieN
-
Divide the word of truth arightN
Show Jesus in a saving lightN
Proclaim to all they're dead outrightN
Till Grace restore themO
The great Redeemer full in sightN
Keep still before themO
-
Dare not like some to mince the matterP
Nor dazzling tropes and figures scatterP
Nor coarsely speak nor basely flatterP
Nor grovelling goQ
But let plain truths as Life's pure waterP
Pellucid flowQ
-
The sinner level with the deadN
The Lamb exalt the Church's HeadN
His holiness adoring spreadN
With godly zealR
Enforce though sinless how He bledN
For sinners' wealR
-
Pourtray how God in thunder spokeS
His fiery Law whilst curling smokeS
In terror fierce from Sinai brokeS
Midst raging flameT
Then Jesu's milder blood invokeS
And preach His nameT
-
Remember still to fear the LordN
To live as well as preach His wordN
And wield the Gospel's two edged swordN
Though dangers lowerP
Example only can affordN
To precept powerP
-
And dress nor slovenly nor gayL
Nor sternly act nor trifling playL
Still keep the golden middle wayL
Whate'er betide youU
And ne'er through giddy pleasures strayL
Though fools deride youU
-
As wily serpent ever proveV
Yet harmless as the turtle doveW
Still winning souls by guileful loveW
And deep inventionC
So once the great Apostle stroveX
With good intentionC
-
And inly to thyself take heedN
Oft prove your heart its pages readN
Self knowledge will in time of needN
Your wants supplyR
Who knows himself from dangers freedN
Where'er he lieR
-
So God will own the labours doneC
Approving see His honoured SonC
And honoured Law and numbers wonC
Of souls immortalR
Through grace will onward conquering runC
To heaven's bright portalR
-
And on that last and greatest dayL
When heaven and earth shall pass awayL
A perfect band in bright arrayL
Will form your crownY
Your joys triumphant wide displayL
And sorrows drownY
-
And now farewell my youthful friendN
Excuse these lines in candour pennedN
To me as freely counsel lendN
With zeal as ferventN
For you will pray till life does endN
Your humble servantN
