-
THOU shouldst have sung the swan song for the choirB
That filled our groves with music till the dayC
Lit the last hilltop with its reddening fireB
And evening listened for thy lingering layC
-
But thou hast found thy voice in realms afarD
Where strains celestial blend their notes with thineE
Some cloudless sphere beneath a happier starD
Welcomes the bright winged spirit we resignE
-
How Nature mourns thee in the still retreatF
Where passed in peace thy love enchanted hoursG
Where shall she find an eye like thine to greetF
Spring's earliest footprints on her opening flowersG
-
Have the pale wayside weeds no fond regretH
For him who read the secrets they enfoldI
Shall the proud spangles of the field forgetH
The verse that lent new glory to their goldI
-
And ye whose carols wooed his infant earJ
Whose chants with answering woodnotes he repaidK
Have ye no song his spirit still may hearJ
From Elmwood's vaults of overarching shadeK
-
Friends of his studious hours who thronged to teachL
The deep read scholar all your varied loreM
Shall he no longer seek your shelves to reachL
The treasure missing from his world wide storeM
-
This singer whom we long have held so dearN
Was Nature's darling shapely strong and fairO
Of keenest wit of judgment crystal clearN
Easy of converse courteous debonairO
-
Fit for the loftiest or the lowliest lotP
Self poised imperial yet of simplest waysQ
At home alike in castle or in cotP
True to his aim let others blame or praiseQ
-
Freedom he found an heirloom from his siresR
Song letters statecraft shared his years in turnS
All went to feed the nation's altar firesG
Whose mourning children wreathe his funeral urnS
-
He loved New England people language soilT
Unweaned by exile from her arid breastU
Farewell awhile white handed son of toilT
Go with her brown armed laborers to thy restU
-
Peace to thy slumber in the forest shadeK
Poet and patriot every gift was thineE
Thy name shall live while summers bloom and fadeK
And grateful Memory guard thy leafy shrineE
