'A SPANISH GIRL IN REVERIE 'A
-
SHE twirled the string of golden beadsB
That round her neck was hungC
My grandsire's gift the good old manD
Loved girls when he was youngC
And bending lightly o'er the cordE
And turning half awayF
With something like a youthful sighG
Thus spoke the maiden grayF
-
'Well one may trail her silken robeH
And bind her locks with pearlsI
And one may wreathe the woodland roseJ
Among her floating curlsI
And one may tread the dewy grassK
And one the marble floorL
Nor half hid bosom heave the lessM
Nor broidered corset moreL
-
'Some years ago a dark eyed girlN
Was sitting in the shadeO
There's something brings her to my mindP
In that young dreaming maidO
And in her hand she held a flowerQ
A flower whose speaking hueR
Said in the language of the heartS
'Believe the giver true '-
-
'And as she looked upon its leavesT
The maiden made a vowU
To wear it when the bridal wreathV
Was woven for her browU
She watched the flower as day by dayF
The leaflets curled and diedW
But he who gave it never cameX
To claim her for his brideW
-
'Oh many a summer's morning glowY
Has lent the rose its rayF
And many a winter's drifting snowY
Has swept its bloom awayF
But she has kept that faithless pledgeZ
To this her winter hourQ
And keeps it still herself aloneA2
And wasted like the flower '-
-
Her pale lip quivered and the lightB2
Gleamed in her moistening eyesC2
I asked her how she liked the tintsD2
In those Castilian skiesC2
'She thought them misty 't was perhapsE2
Because she stood too near '-
She turned away and as she turnedF2
I saw her wipe a tearG2
