Good people all of every sortA
Give ear unto my songB
And if you find it wondrous shortA
It cannot hold you longB
-
In Islington there was a manC
Of whom the world might sayD
That still a godly race he ranC
Whene'er he went to prayD
-
A kind and gentle heart he hadE
To comfort friends and foesF
The naked every day he cladE
When he put on his clothesG
-
And in that town a dog was foundH
As many dogs there beI
Both mongrel puppy whelp and houndH
And curs of low degreeI
-
This dog and man at first were friendsJ
But when a pique beganC
The dog to gain some private endsJ
Went mad and bit the manC
-
Around from all the neighbouring streetsK
The wond'ring neighbours ranC
And swore the dog had lost its witsL
To bite so good a manC
-
The wound it seemed both sore and sadE
To every Christian eyeM
And while they swore the dog was madE
They swore the man would dieM
-
But soon a wonder came to lightN
That showed the rogues they liedO
The man recovered of the biteN
The dog it was that diedO
