In Baltimore there lived a boyA
He wasn't anybody's joyA
Although his name was Jabez DawesB
His character was full of flawsB
-
-
In school he never led his classesC
He hid old ladies' reading glassesC
His mouth was open when he chewedD
And elbows to the table gluedD
He stole the milk of hungry kittensE
And walked through doors marked NO ADMITTANCEF
He said he acted thus becauseB
There wasn't any Santa ClausB
-
-
Another trick that tickled JabezB
Was crying 'Boo' at little babiesB
He brushed his teeth they said in townG
Sideways instead of up and downG
Yet people pardoned every sinH
And viewed his antics with a grinH
Till they were told by Jabez DawesB
'There isn't any Santa Claus '-
-
-
Deploring how he did behaveI
His parents swiftly sought their graveI
They hurried through the portals pearlyJ
And Jabez left the funeral earlyJ
-
-
Like whooping cough from child to childK
He sped to spread the rumor wildK
'Sure as my name is Jabez DawesB
There isn't any Santa Claus '-
Slunk like a weasel of a martenL
Through nursery and kindergartenL
Whispering low to every totM
'There isn't any no there's not '-
-
-
The children wept all Christmas eveN
And Jabez chortled up his sleeveN
No infant dared hang up his stockingO
For fear of Jabez' ribald mockingO
-
-
He sprawled on his untidy bedP
Fresh malice dancing in his headP
When presently with scalp a tinglingO
Jabez heard a distant jinglingO
He heard the crunch of sleigh and hoofQ
Crisply alighting on the roofQ
What good to rise and bar the doorR
A shower of soot was on the floorR
-
-
What was beheld by Jabez DawesB
The fireplace full of Santa ClausB
Then Jabez fell upon his kneesB
With cries of 'Don't ' and 'Pretty Please '-
He howled 'I don't know where you read itS
But anyhow I never said it '-
'Jabez' replied the angry saintT
'It isn't I it's you that ain'tT
Although there is a Santa ClausB
There isn't any Jabez Dawes '-
-
-
Said Jabez then with impudent vimU
'Oh yes there is and I am himU
Your magic don't scare me it doesn't'T
And suddenly he found he wasn'tT
From grimy feet to grimy locksB
Jabez became a Jack in the boxB
An ugly toy with springs unsprungO
Forever sticking out his tongueO
-
-
The neighbors heard his mournful squealV
They searched for him but not with zealV
No trace was found of Jabez DawesB
Which led to thunderous applauseB
And people drank a loving cupW
And went and hung their stockings upW
-
-
All you who sneer at Santa ClausB
Beware the fate of Jabez DawesB
The saucy boy who mocked the saintT
Donner and Blitzen licked off his paintT
