My heart leaps up when I beholdA
A rainbow in the skyB
Contrariwise my blood runs coldA
When little boys go byB
For little boys as little boysC
No special hate I carryD
But now and then they grow to menE
And when they do they marryD
No matter how they tarryD
Eventually they marryD
And swine among the pearlsF
They marry little girlsF
-
Oh somewhere somewhere an infant playsG
With parents who feed and clothe himH
Their lips are sticky with pride and praiseG
But I have begun to loathe himH
Yes I loathe with loathing shamelessI
This child who to me is namelessI
This bachelor child in his carriageJ
Gives never a thought to marriageJ
But a person can hardly say knifeK
Before he will hunt him a wifeK
-
I never see an infant maleL
A sleeping in the sunM
Without I turn a trifle paleL
And think is he the oneM
Oh first he'll want to crop his curlsF
And then he'll want a ponyD
And then he'll think of pretty girlsF
And holy matrimonyD
A cat without a mouseN
Is he without a spouseN
-
Oh somewhere he bubbles bubbles of milkO
And quietly sucks his thumbsP
His cheeks are roses painted on silkO
And his teeth are tucked in his gumsP
But alas the teeth will begin to growQ
And the bubbles will cease to bubbleR
Given a score of years or soQ
The roses will turn to stubbleR
He'll sell a bond or he'll write a bookS
And his eyes will get that acquisitive lookS
And raging and ravenous for the killT
He'll boldly ask for the hand of JillT
This infant whose middleR
Is diapered stillT
Will want to marry My daughter JillT
-
Oh sweet be his slumber and moist his middleR
My dreams I fear are infanticiddleR
A fig for embryo LohengrinsQ
I'll open all his safety pinsQ
I'll pepper his powder and salt his bottleR
And give him readings from AristotleR
Sand for his spinach I'll gladly bringU
And Tabasco sauce for his teething ringU
Then perhaps he'll struggle though fire and waterV
To marry somebody else's daughterV
