Find me an Etesot i define you BeautyA
His skin colour is like the shea sold in 'Arua'B
Looks calloused but when touched its as smooth as the gliding stream in 'Awoja'C
His smile like a fresh open coconutD
His accent hideously richE
for he pronounces every word with clarityA
His lips are to die forB
I'd write a whole book if I mayF
-
Find me an Etesot i define you CharacterB
I show you a man of exceptional integrityA
He is loyal honest and compassionateD
To his Creator beautiful adorationG
They speak a language only they can fathomH
He will know how to mend both your spirit and heartI
-
My 'Etesot' is like a blessing on an early Sunday morningJ
Like a new creation in God's eyesK
Like the best way to live and dieL
He has taught me how to eat pasted foodsM
How to speak 'Ateso' and wear 'Emukule'N
How to dance to the 'Akogo'J
Oh how i long to be in his arms againO
Find me my EtesotL

Nagasha Brenda

Poet's note: This poem is about a girl who is madly in love with an 'Etesot'. I wrote it in September 2021(after lockdown) on my way back from Soroti(Teso) to Kampala. The Iteso are a tribe that lives in the eastern part of Uganda and Kenya too. Iteso is in plural to mean two or many,Etesot is a male person from Teso while Atesot is the female person from Teso(Place). Below are a few more new words I use in the poem and their meanings. Arua - A district in the Northern Region of Uganda. Awoja - River and Swamp that connects Lake Kyoga to Lake Bisina. Emukule - Hides. Ateso - A language spoken by the Iteso. Akogo - a courtship dance among the Iteso.
