Dawn has flashed up the startled skiesA
Night has gone out beneath the hillB
Many sweet times before our eyesA
Dawn makes and unmakes about us stillB
The magic that we call the roseC
The gentle history of the rainD
Has been unfolded traced and lostE
By the sharp finger tips of frostE
Birds in the hawthorn build againF
The hare makes soft her secret houseG
The wind at tourney comes and goesC
Spurring the green unharnessed boughsH
The moon has waxed fierce and waned dimI
He knew the beauty of all thoseC
Last year and who remembers himI
-
Love sometimes walks the waters stillB
Laughter throws back her radiant headJ
Utterly beauty is not goneK
And wonder is not wholly deadJ
The starry mortal world rolls onL
Between sweet sounds and silencesM
With new strange wines her beakers brimI
He lost his heritage with theseN
Last year and who remembers himI
-
None remember him he liesA
In earth of some strange sounding placeO
Nameless beneath the nameless skiesA
The wind his only chant the rainD
The only tears upon his faceO
Far and forgotten utterlyP
By living man Yet such as heP
Have made it possible and sureQ
For other lives to have to beP
For men to sleep content secureQ
Lip touches lip and eyes meet eyesA
Because his heart beats not againF
His rotting fruitless body liesA
That sons may grow from other menF
-
He gave as Christ the life he hadR
The only life desired or knownS
The great sad sacrifice was madeT
For strangers this forgotten deadJ
Went out into the night aloneS
There was his body broken for youU
There was his blood divinely shedJ
That in the earth lie lost and dimI
Eat drink and often as you doU
For whom he died remember himI
