FAREWELL is said Yea but I cannot takeA
All that my Greeting gaveB
In you hath Hope her doom and Joy her graveB
Still you go crowned with old imaginingsC
Clad in the purple that young passion flingsC
About the sorriest god that Love can makeA
-
Ah would you might forget and so pass byD
Unwounded of my kissC
Made free of Youth's unmemorable blissC
Love's hand that speeds along his daisy chainE
Forgets in swift delight to tell againF
Old prayers upon a new strung rosaryG
-
For when I part from you I would not leaveH
One shadow that might beG
A ghost to haunt you what you had of meG
I would fold by in Memory's lavenderI
Something my breath may very gently stirI
In the slow fading of a rainy eveH
-
When you drop cherries in the purple wineJ
For other lips to drainE
Let not old nights betrayed leap up againF
Throw down no murdering chalice at your feastK
To night nor find another woman's breastL
Less lovely with the sudden dream of mineJ
-
Yet if a stranger bear my name or oneM
With the same coloured eyesC
Glance at you suddenly lost dreams shall riseC
With unintelligible swift appealsC
The broken images of old idealsC
Shall stare from corners where as gods they shoneN
-
Farewell is on the lips of the first kissC
But speaks no word untilO
The loud voice of Desire hath had its willO
Greeting is swift and beautiful FarewellP
Is slow and patient and immutableQ
Knowing of old that love must lead to thisC
-
Greeting Farewell The day's grown very oldR
My heart put out the lightS
Read no more pages of the Past to nightS
There are no roses here to miss the sunM
A soul hath looked on love and he hath flownN
Ashes are on the wind the tale is toldR
