Once on a time in sunshine weatherA
Falsehood and Truth walk'd out togetherA
The neighbouring woods and lawns to viewB
As opposites will sometimes doB
Through many a blooming mead they pass'dC
And at a brook arrived at lastC
The purling stream the margin greenD
With flowers bedeck'd a vernal sceneD
Invited each itinerant maidE
To rest a while beneath the shadeE
Under a spreading beech they satF
And pass'd the time with female chatF
While each her thoughts the other feign'dG
At length quoth Falsehood Sister TruthH
For so she call'd her from her youthH
What if to shun yon sultry beamI
We bathe in this delightful streamI
The bottom smooth the water clearJ
And there's no prying shepherd nearJ
With all my heart the nymph repliedK
And threw her snowy robes asideK
Stripp'd herself naked to the skinL
And with a spring leapp'd headlong inL
Falsehood more leisurely undress'dM
And laying by her tawdry vestM
Trick'd herself out in Truth's arrayN
And cross the meadows tripp'd awayN
-
From this cursed hour the fraudful dameO
Of sacred Truth usurps the nameO
And with a vile perfidious mindP
Roams far and near to cheat mankindP
False sighs suborns and artful tearsQ
And starts with vain pretended fearsR
In visits vain still appears most wiseS
And rolls at church her saint like eyesS
Talks very much plays idle tricksT
While rising stock her conscience pricksT
When being poor thing extremely gravell'dP
She secrets ope'd and all unravell'dP
But on she will and secrets tellU
Of John and Joan and Ned and NellU
Reviling every one she knowsV
As fancy leads beneath the roseV
Her tongue so voluble and kindP
It always runs before her mindP
As times do serve she slily pleadsW
And copious tears still show her needsW
With promises as thick as weedsW
Speaks pro and con is wondrous civilX
To day a saint to morrow devilX
-
Poor Truth she stripp'd as has been saidP
And naked left the lovely maidP
Who scorning from her cause to winceY
Has gone stark naked ever sinceY
And ever naked will appearJ
Beloved by all who Truth revereJ
