To The Lady Dursley Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABB CCDD EEFF GGHI

Here reading how fond Adam was betray'dA
And how by sin Eve's blasted charms decay'dA
Our common loss unjustly you complainB
So small that part of it which you sustainB
-
You still fair mother in your offspring traceC
The stock of beauty destined for the raceC
Kind Nature forming them the pattern tookD
From heaven's first work and Eve's original lookD
-
You happy saint the serpent's power controlE
Scarce any actual guilt defiles your soulE
And hell does o'er that mind vain triumphs boastF
Which gains does o'er that mind vain triumphs boastF
-
With virtue strong as yours had Eve been arm'dG
In vain the fruit had blush'd or serpent charm'dG
Nor had our bliss by penitence been boughtH
Nor had frail Adam fall'n nor Milton wroteI
