To Mr. Harley - Wounded By Guiscard Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDCD EFEF GFGF HIHI FJFJ EKEB LMNM OPOP

In one greatA
nowB
superior to an ageC
The full extremes of nature's force we findD
How heavenly virtue can exalt or rageC
Infernal how degrade the human mindD
-
While the fierce monk does at his trial standE
He chews revenge abjuring his offenceF
Guile in his tongue and murder in his handE
He stabs his judge to prove his innocenceF
-
The guilty stroke and torture of the steelG
Infix'd our dauntless Briton scarce perceivesF
The wounds his country from his death must feelG
The patriot views for those alone he grievesF
-
The barbarous rage that durst attempt thy lifeH
Harley great counsellor extends thy fameI
And the sharp point of cruel Guiscard's knifeH
In brass and marble carves thy deathless nameI
-
Faithful assertor of thy country's causeF
Britain with tears shall bathe thy glorious woundJ
She for thy safety shall enlarge her lawsF
And in her statutes shall thy worth be foundJ
-
Yet 'midst her sighs she triumphs on the handE
Reflecting that diffused the public woK
A stranger to her altars and her landE
No son of hers could meditate this bowB
-
Meantime thy pain is gracious Anna's areL
Our queen our saint with sacrificing breathM
Softens thy anguish in her powerful prayerN
She pleads thy service and forbids thy deathM
-
Great as thou art thou canst demand no moreO
O breast bewail'd by earth preserved by HeavenP
No higher can aspiring virtue soarO
Enough to thee of grief and fame is givenP
