To A Young Lady, Who Was Fond Of Fortune-telling Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

You Madam may with safety goA
Decrees of destiny to knowA
For at your birth kind planets reign'dB
And certain happiness ordain'dB
Such charms as yours are only givenC
To chosen favourites of HeavenC
But such is my uncertain stateD
'Tis dangerous to try my fateD
For I would only know from artE
The future motions of your hertF
And what predestinated doomG
Attends my love for years to comeH
No secrets else that mortals learnI
My cares deserve or life concernI
But this will so important beJ
I dread to search the dark decreeJ
For while the smallest hope remainsK
Faint joys are mingled with my painsK
Vain distant views my fancy pleaseL
And give some intermitting easeL
But should the stars too plainly showA
That you have doom'd my endless woA
No human force or art could bearM
The torment of my wild despairM
This secret then I dare not knowA
And other truths are useless nowN
What matters if unbless'd in loveO
How long or short my life will proveP
To gratify what low desireQ
Should I with needless haste inquireR
How great how wealthy I shall beJ
Oh what is wealth or power to meJ
If I am happy or undoneC
It must proceed from you aloneS
