To A Lady Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEDE FGHG IJIK BLBM NOPO GQGQ RBRB

Spare gen'rous victor spare the slaveA
Who did unequal war pursueB
That more than triumph he might haveC
In being overcome by youB
-
In the dispute whate'er I saidD
My heart was by my tongue beliedE
And in my looks you might have readD
How much I argued on your sideE
-
You far from danger as from fearF
Might have sustain'd an open fightG
For seldom your opinions errH
Your eyes are always in the rightG
-
Why fair one would you not relyI
On Reason's force with Beauty's join'dJ
Could I their prevalence denyI
I must at once be deaf and blindK
-
Alas not hoping to subdueB
I only to the fight aspir'dL
To keep the beauteous foe in viewB
Was all the glory I desir'dM
-
But she howe'er of vict'ry sureN
Contemns the wreath too long delay'dO
And arm'd with more immediate pow'rP
Calls cruel silence to her aidO
-
Deeper to wound she shuns the fightG
She drops her arms to gain the fieldQ
Secures her conquest by her flightG
And triumphs when she seems to yieldQ
-
So when the Parthian turn'd his steedR
And from the hostile camp withdrewB
With cruel skill the backward reedR
He sent and as he fled he slewB
