LORDS knights and squires the numerous bandA
nbsp nbsp nbsp That wear the fair Miss Mary's fettersB
Were summoned by her high commandA
nbsp nbsp nbsp To show their passions by their lettersB
-
My pen amongst the rest I tookC
nbsp nbsp nbsp Lest those bright eyes that cannot readD
Should dart their kindling fire and lookC
nbsp nbsp nbsp The power they have to be obey'dE
-
Nor quality nor reputationF
nbsp nbsp nbsp Forbid me yet my flame to tellG
Dear Five years old befriends my passionF
nbsp nbsp nbsp And I may write till she can spellG
-
For while she makes her silkworms bedsH
nbsp nbsp nbsp With all the tender things I swearI
Whilst all the house my passion readsJ
nbsp nbsp nbsp In papers round her baby's hairI
-
She may receive and own my flameK
nbsp nbsp nbsp For though the strictest prudes should know itL
She'll pass for a most virtuous dameK
nbsp nbsp nbsp And I for an unhappy poetM
-
Then too alas when she shall tearI
nbsp nbsp nbsp The rhymes some younger rival sendsN
She'll give me leave to write I fearO
nbsp nbsp nbsp And we shall still continue friendsN
-
For as our different ages moveP
nbsp nbsp nbsp 'Tis so ordain'd would Fate but mend itL
That I shall be past making loveQ
nbsp nbsp nbsp When she begins to comprehend itL
