Rhyme Scheme: A BCBC DEDF GHGH IJKJ LMLN JOPO QMRM

The author suppos'd fortyA
-
-
Lords Knights and Squires the num'rous BandB
That wear the Fair Miss Mary's FettersC
Were summon'd by her high CommandB
TO show their Passion by their LettersC
-
My Pen amongst the rest I tookD
Lest those bright Eyes that cannot readE
Shou'd dart their kindling Fires and lookD
The Pow'r they have to be obey'dF
-
Nor Quality nor ReputationG
Forbid me yet my Flame to tellH
Dear Five Years old befriends my PassionG
And I may Write 'till she can SpellH
-
For while she makes her Silk worms BedsI
With all the tender things I swearJ
Whilst all the House my Passion readsK
In Papers round her Baby's HairJ
-
She may receive and own my FlameL
For tho' the strictest Prudes shou'd know itM
She'll pass for a most virtuous DameL
And I for an unhappy PoetN
-
Then too alas when she shall tearJ
The Lines some younger Rival sendsO
She'll give me leave to Write I fearP
And we shall still continue FriendsO
-
For as our diff'rent Ages moveQ
'Tis so ordain'd wou'd Fate but mend itM
That I shall be past making LoveR
When she begins to comprehend itM
