Will Piggot must to Coxwould goA
To live alas in wantB
Unless Sir Thomas say No noA
Th' allowance is too scantC
-
The gracious knight full well does weetC
Ten farthings ne'er will doC
To keep a man each day in meatC
Some bread to meat is dueC
-
A Rechabite poor Will must liveD
And drink of Adam's aleE
Pure element no life can giveF
Or mortal soul regaleE
-
Spare diet and spring water clearG
Physicians hold are goodC
Who diets thus need never fearG
A fever in the bloodC
-
Gramercy Sirs ye're in the rightC
Prescriptions all can sellE
But he that does not eat can't shH
Or piss if good drink failE
-
But pass The AEsculapian crewC
Who eat and quaff the bestC
They seldom miss to bake and brewC
Or lin to break their fastC
-
Could Yorkshire tyke but do the sameI
Then he like them might thriveD
But Fortune Fortune cruel DameI
To starve thou dost him driveD
-
In Will's old master's plenteous daysJ
His memory e'er be bless'dC
What need of speaking in his praiseJ
His goodness stands confess'dC
-
At his famed gate stood CharityC
In lovely sweet arrayK
Ceres and HospitalityC
Dwelt there both night and dayK
-
But to conclude and be conciseL
Truth must Will's voucher beC
Truth never yet went in disguiseM
For naked still is sheC
-
There is but one but one aloneN
Can set the pilgrim freeC
And make him cease to pine and moanN
O Frankland it is theeC
-
Oh save him from a dreary wayK
To Coxwould he must hieO
Bereft of thee he wends astrayK
At Coxwould he must dieC
-
Oh let him in thy hall but standC
And wear a porter's gownP
Duteous to what thou may'st commandC
Thus William's wishes crownP
