The Despairing Shepherd Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABAACDDEAAEFFCGGCFF HIJKLLIFFIFFFMLF

Alexis shun'd his Fellow SwainsA
Their rural Sports and jocund StrainsA
Heav'n guard us all from Cupid's BowB
He lost his Crook He left his FlocksA
And wand'ring thro' the lonely RocksA
He nourish'd endless WoeC
The Nymphs and Shepherds round Him cameD
His Grief Some pity Others blameD
The fatal Cause All kindly seekE
He mingled his Concern with Their'sA
He gave 'em back their friendly TearsA
He sigh'd but would not speakE
Clorinda came among the restF
And She too kind Concern exprestF
And ask'd the Reason of his WoeC
She ask'd but with an Air and MeinG
That made it easily foreseenG
She fear'd too much to knowC
The Shepherd rais'd his mournful HeadF
And will You pardon Me He saidF
While I the cruel Truth revealH
Which nothing from my Breast should tearI
Which never should offend Your EarJ
But that You bid Me tellK
'Tis thus I rove 'tis thus complainL
Since You appear'd upon the PlainL
You are the Cause of all my CareI
Your Eyes ten thousand Dangers dartF
Ten thousand Torments vex My HeartF
I love and I despairI
Too much Alexis I have heardF
'Tis what I thought 'tis what I fear'dF
And yet I pardon You She cry'dF
But You shall promise ne'er againM
To breath your Vows or speak your PainL
He bow'd obey'd and dy'dF
