Songs Set To Music: 6. Set By Mr. Smith Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IJKJ

Phillis since we have both been kindA
And of each other had our fillB
Tell me what pleasure you can findA
In forcing Nature 'gainst her willB
-
'Tis true you may with art and painC
Keep in some glowings of desireD
But still those glowings which remainC
Are only ashes of the fireD
-
Then let us free each other's soulE
And laugh at the dull constant foolF
Who would Love's liberty controlE
And teach us how to whine by ruleF
-
Let us no impositions setG
Or clogs upon each other's heartH
But as for pleasure first we metG
So now for pleasure let us partH
-
We both have spent our stock of loveI
So consequently should be freeJ
Thyrsis expects you in yon groveK
And pretty Chloris stays for meJ
