Songs Set To Music: 14. Set By Mr. Smith Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Once I was unconfined and freeA
Would I had been so stillB
Enjoying sweetest libertyA
And roving at my willB
-
But now not master of my heartC
Cupid does so decideD
That two she tyrants shall it partC
And so poor me divideD
-
Victoria's will I must obeyE
She acts without controlF
Phillis has such a taking wayE
She charms my very soulF
-
Deceived by Phillis' looks and smilesG
Into her snares I runH
Victoria shows me all her wilesG
Which yet I dare not shunH
-
From one I fancy every kissI
Has something in't divineJ
And awful taste the balmy blissI
That joins her lips with mineJ
-
But when with th' other I embraceK
Though she be not a queenL
Methinks 'tis sweet with such a lassM
To tumble on the greenL
-
Thus here you see a shared heartC
But I meanwhile the foolN
Each in it has an equal partC
But neither yet the wholeF
-
Nor will it if I right forecastO
To either wholly yieldP
I find the time approaches fastO
When both must quit the fieldP
